Washington warns US citizens against travel to Libya for any reason

The US Department of State has maintained Libya at Level 4 of its travel advisory system, the highest level, urging US citizens not to travel to the country due to ongoing security risks.

The department said Libya faces risks related to crime, terrorism, civil unrest and kidnapping, as well as the widespread availability of weapons and the possibility of clashes erupting at any time between armed groups and forces aligned with the authorities.

The State Department warned that kidnappings and assassinations target individuals in different parts of the country, while criminal groups are involved in trafficking drugs, people and goods. It noted that US citizens could be among those targeted for kidnapping.

It also warned that terrorist attacks could occur without warning and that protests could turn violent and disrupt transportation and essential services. The department further highlighted the risks posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance, whose locations are not always known or marked.

The department noted that there is no US Embassy operating in Libya, limiting the US government’s ability to provide emergency assistance to American citizens in the country.

It urged US citizens who decide to travel to Libya despite the warning to have an independent emergency departure plan, make appropriate security and communications arrangements, and share essential documents and information with trusted individuals.

The State Department stressed that Libya’s travel advisory level remains unchanged and that the country continues to be classified as Level 4: “Do Not Travel.”
