Vultures in Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia provide sanitation and other services worth about 1.8 billion dollars a year, and India’s vulture collapse cost an estimated 69 billion dollars annually in lost lives
Perched on a carcass baking under the African sun, a bare headed bird that most people instinctively look away from is running one of nature’s most important sanitation systems.
It does the work for free, every day, without a budget line or a government contract.
And now economists working for a conservation group have put an annual dollar figure on what that service is worth.
The number lands at nearly two billion dollars across just three southern African countries, and what happened in India when the birds disappeared is the reason anyone bothered to do the math.
The bird that almost no one cheers for
Walk through any American zoo and the vulture enclosure rarely draws a crowd.
The bird is bald, hunched and unhurried, and its dining habits are exactly what they look like: it eats the dead.
But that reputation hides a biological marvel.
A vulture’s digestive tract is extremely acidic, which is why the birds can strip carcasses that would sicken almost any other animal.
Researchers credit that gut chemistry with neutralizing many of the bacteria they swallow, though vultures are not sterile and can still carry some organisms.
So the bird does not just remove a carcass. It removes much of the disease hiding inside it.
A group of vultures can reduce a cow carcass to bone in about 45 minutes, faster than the scavengers that replace them.
Because of that speed, vultures act like a living firebreak between rotting flesh and the drinking water, the livestock and the people living nearby.
Most of that work happens without spectacle, on scrubland and savanna far from any road, which is precisely why no one priced it until recently.
A $1.8 billion figure that finally gives the bird its due
In February 2025, BirdLife International released an economic assessment focused on Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia.
The report calculated that vultures in those countries provide ecosystem services worth 1.8 billion dollars every year.
That figure covers sanitation, pest control and what economists call bequest value, the worth that people place on knowing a species will still exist for future generations.
By consuming carcasses before bacteria can leach into soil and surface water, vultures spare the region disease costs that would otherwise land on governments and rural families.
The report also found that failing to protect vultures could cost the region roughly $47 million a year, while conservation efforts could generate about $30 million a year.
Some vulture specialists, reported by Mongabay, have urged caution about parts of the valuation, particularly the decision to price belief based use of the birds.
Africa is home to eleven vulture species, and seven are listed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered on the IUCN Red List.
How India accidentally ran the experiment
The clearest evidence of what vultures are worth came not from a model but from a collapse that nobody planned.
In the 1990s, after a patent expired, Indian farmers began using a cheap veterinary painkiller called diclofenac in their cattle.
The drug was harmless to livestock.
To vultures that fed on treated carcasses, even a small dose caused lethal kidney failure.
Within roughly a decade, India’s vulture population fell from an estimated 50 million birds to a few thousand.
The carcasses that had once vanished in under an hour began piling up across the countryside.
Rotting flesh drew in feral dogs and rats, poorer scavengers that leave infected remains behind.
Stray dog numbers rose, rabies spread, and measured bacteria levels in local water sources increased.
The bill that finally reached the ledger
Eyal Frank of the University of Chicago and Anant Sudarshan of the University of Warwick eventually measured what that collapse had cost.
Their study, published in the American Economic Review in 2024, compared death rates across more than 600 districts and found human mortality rose more than 4 percent where vultures had been abundant.
That implied about 100,000 additional deaths a year between 2000 and 2005, roughly half a million in total, with damages quantified at an estimated 69 billion dollars per year.
Part of the harm came from disposal itself. When carcasses accumulated, chemicals used to get rid of them, and the remains dumped near waterways, pushed contaminants into water people used.
India banned veterinary diclofenac in 2006, but conservationists report that illegal use continues and that other drugs toxic to vultures remain approved for livestock.
Recovery is slow. Vultures breed slowly and typically raise just one chick, so rebuilding a population takes decades rather than seasons, which makes prevention far cheaper than restoration.
The same logic applies wherever wild Pacific salmon or another keystone species holds an ecosystem together, long before the first invoice arrives.
What southern Africa can still protect
Africa’s vultures face threats of their own.
BirdLife reports that poisoning accounts for more than 60 percent of recorded vulture deaths across the continent, and belief based use, electrocution and collisions account for much of the rest.
In June 2019, a single poisoning incident in Botswana’s Central District killed 537 vultures of five species, plus two tawny eagles, after three poached elephant carcasses were laced with a toxic chemical, the government said.
The BirdLife report gives conservation advocates a number that speaks the language of finance ministers, not just wildlife biologists.
It fits a broader pattern, from wild bees delivering free pollination to beaver dams absorbing flood costs that would otherwise fall on municipalities.
The estimates carry real uncertainty, and pricing nature remains an imprecise exercise.
But the direction of the evidence points one way: the unglamorous creature doing unnoticed work every day tends to be worth more than anyone had written down.
A bald bird on a sun bleached plain, pulling disease out of the ground one carcass at a time, turns out to be one of the region’s most valuable public health workers, and it has never once sent a bill.
