Vice President James Wani Igga has directed the Ministry of Mining to ensure all companies operating in South Sudan’s mining sector comply with national laws and regulations.
Igga, who chairs the Economic Cluster, also stressed that mining activities must benefit the people of South Sudan.
He made the remarks on Monday in Juba after receiving a briefing from Mining Minister Losuba Ludoru Wongo and his delegation.
The briefing covered plans to conduct geological surveys to determine the country’s mineral potential across all states, as well as updates on exploration processes for companies seeking to invest in the sector.
The ministry also briefed the Vice President on challenges facing the mining industry.
According to the ministry, Shamrock Company is among the major firms seeking to invest in South Sudan’s mining sector.
The company has reportedly agreed to construct three major roads and establish a gold refinery to add value to minerals extracted in the country.
Vice President Igga reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting responsible investment in the mining sector, saying mining activities should contribute to economic stabilization.
The government has been seeking to expand mining activities while strengthening regulation and ensuring the sector contributes more to national development.
