UT Tyler, Pollard Theatre team up for ‘Prince of Egypt’ musical

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – UT Tyler and Pollard Theatre are collaborating on a stage production of The Prince of Egypt, a musical set to open in January.

Auditions are scheduled for Aug. 28 and 29, with preparatory workshops available ahead of those dates.

Dr. Sue Park, who is leading the production alongside Jane Milner of Pollard Theatre, said the partnership grew out of a prior collaboration on Singin’ in the Rain.

Milner said the collaboration is designed to give UT Tyler students an opportunity to work alongside Pollard Theatre’s experienced staff in areas including costumes, set design, and props.

The Prince of Egypt is based on the biblical story of Moses and features music written by Stephen Schwartz and orchestrated by Hans Zimmer.

The stage adaptation follows the Moses narrative — including the plagues, his time as prince, and the Israelites’ escape from Egypt — while portraying Pharaoh as a brother figure to Moses rather than solely as an antagonist.

Park said Jarvis Christian University will also participate as part of the ensemble.

Organizers are seeking a full cast, including principal roles and an ensemble of approximately 30 performers. Park said all skill levels are welcome, including those who are stronger in dance than in singing.

Two preparatory workshops are available before auditions: a dance workshop on Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to noon, and a music workshop on Aug. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Auditions will be held Aug. 28 and Aug. 29. Park said Friday slots are nearly full, and prospective auditionees are encouraged to sign up for Saturday. Participants need to attend only one audition day.

To sign up, organizers said searching “Prince of Egypt auditions” on Google will surface a registration form with all required instructions and links to audition materials.
