US, Israel Reaffirm Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty over Western Sahara

Rabat – The US and Israel have reaffirmed their recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara.

The US Mission to the UN published a joint statement from the US, Morocco, and Israel, in which Tel Aviv and Washington reiterated their support for Morocco’s Sahara position.

The joint statement followed a meeting in New York, where Israel and Morocco announced an agreement to upgrade their diplomatic relations and appoint ambassadors.

Morocco’s state news agency, Maghreb Arab Press (MAP), and Morocco’s government have not released any statement regarding the meeting at the time of writing.

According to the joint statement, Israel and the US renewed support for Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic Autonomy Plan as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute over the Western Sahara territory.

For Washington and Tel Aviv, “any other path prolongs the status quo and is unacceptable,” stating that a solution will not only bring peace to the region but “prosperity and greater integration for all of Africa.”

The US has recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in December 2022 under Trump’s administration. Since then, the US has emphasized that the Autonomy Plan is the only feasible political solution able to end the dispute.

The US has also been facilitating talks with the parties to the dispute, convening them for two roundtable talks.

Madrid and Washington hosted the discussions, involving Algeria, Polisario, Morocco, and Mauritania.

The talks followed the adoption of the historic UN Security Council Resolution 2797 in October 2025, which recognized Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the genuine political solution to end the dispute over Western Sahara.

The resolution also urged all political parties to engage in negotiations and talks and contribute to the UN-led political process to find an agreed-upon solution to the dispute.

The appeal shut down Algeria’s regime’s reluctance and attempts to shrink its responsibility in the dispute. For decades, Algiers refused to shoulder its responsibility as a main party and claimed itself as merely an observer- despite harboring, financing, arming, and supporting Polisario’s separatism.

The joint statement from the three countries also touched on the importance of upgrading relations between Rabat and Tel Aviv, despite opposition from many Moroccans who continue to urge Morocco to cut ties with Israel.

According to  the communique, the establishment of full diplomatic, peaceful, and friendly relations between Morocco and Israel is in the “common interest of both countries and will advance the cause of peace and unlock new opportunities for the entire region.”
