US Donates $2.3 Million in Military Equipment to Niger to Support Counterterrorism Efforts

NIAMEY, Niger — The United States has donated nine containers of military equipment worth nearly $2.3 million to Niger’s armed forces, aiming to strengthen the country’s capacity to combat extremist groups and transnational criminal networks, the US embassy in Niamey said.

The shipment, delivered on May 26, includes military uniforms, protective gear and medical supplies intended for Nigerien security forces operating in some of the region’s most volatile areas, according to an embassy statement.

Washington said the donation underscores its commitment to supporting security cooperation in the Sahel, despite shifting diplomatic relations with several governments in the region in recent years.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has emphasized security partnerships as jihadist violence linked to Al-Qaeda-affiliated groups and other armed organizations continues to spread across West Africa.

The assistance comes amid persistent insecurity in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, where insurgent attacks have killed thousands of people and displaced millions over the past decade.

In February, Washington lifted sanctions imposed on three senior Malian officials accused of maintaining ties with the Russian mercenary group Wagner, a move analysts viewed as a sign of evolving US policy toward military-led governments in the Sahel.

Recent months have also seen a rise in violence along the border regions shared by Niger, Benin and Nigeria, where armed groups have expanded their operations and increased attacks on both security forces and civilians.

The latest US support package highlights ongoing international efforts to bolster regional security as Sahel nations struggle to contain a growing insurgency that has destabilized large parts of West Africa.
