US and European Powers Seek Referral of Iran’s File to UN Security Council

The United States, Great Britain, France, and Germany have drafted a resolution for consideration at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors meeting, calling for resolutions concerning Iran’s non-compliance to be transmitted to the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly.

According to the draft text reviewed by Reuters, the Board of Governors once again urges Iran to urgently remedy its non-compliance with its Safeguards Agreement by taking all necessary actions required by the IAEA and the Board. This would enable the Director General to provide the required assurances regarding the correctness and completeness of Iran’s declarations and the non-diversion of safeguarded nuclear material.

Another clause of the draft requests IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi to transmit this resolution, two previous Board of Governors resolutions, and the Director General’s recent report to all IAEA member states, as well as to the UN Security Council and General Assembly.

The draft also reaffirms support for a diplomatic solution to Iran’s nuclear file, calling on Iran to engage unconditionally in dialogue aimed at building international confidence in the exclusively peaceful nature of its nuclear program.

Furthermore, the Director General is requested to continue reporting on the implementation of the Safeguards Agreement, unresolved safeguards issues, and verification activities in Iran before the quarterly Board of Governors meetings and to make these reports available to the Security Council.

The IAEA Board of Governors meeting is taking place in Vienna, Austria, from Monday, September 7, to Friday, September 11.
