UNSMIL explores Tunisian expertise for mine clearance in Libya

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) is seeking to draw on Tunisian expertise to strengthen Libya’s capacity in mine clearance and explosive ordnance disposal.

The discussions came during a visit to the Tunisian Centre of Excellence for Countering Improvised Explosive Devices in Bizerte by the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Resident Coordinator in Libya, Ulrika Richardson, accompanied by a delegation from the UN Mine Action Service.

Talks focused on specialised cooperation, including training in disposing of explosive remnants of war and countering improvised explosive devices. 

Richardson said the centre’s experience could complement Libya’s existing capabilities and help protect civilians, reduce the risk of unplanned explosions, and support wider stability.

Officials at the centre, established in 2015 and recently recognised by the UN Mine Action Service, outlined its training programmes and facilities, which focus on building national and regional expertise in counter-IED operations and explosive ordnance disposal.

German and Italian military attachés also attended the visit.
