UNSMIL calls for immediate end to clashes in Zawiya and Sorman

The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has called for an immediate end to armed clashes in Zawiya and Sorman, warning of the impact on civilians and critical infrastructure.

In a statement, the mission condemned the recent violence and urged all sides to stop fighting and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions.

UNSMIL said the clashes had caused civilian deaths and injuries and damaged public and private property, including the Zawiya oil refinery.

It also said fighting in Sorman had led to the escape of several prisoners, raising concerns about civilian safety and security.

The mission called for an independent and comprehensive investigation into the violence in both cities, saying those responsible should be held accountable.

It warned that using heavy weapons or establishing military positions in or near populated areas in ways that endanger civilians was unacceptable and could constitute crimes under national and international law.

UNSMIL urged the relevant Libyan authorities to establish a mechanism to remove heavy weapons from populated areas and called on local, political and security leaders to work towards de-escalation.

It said it remained ready to support Libyan efforts to strengthen accountability, protect critical infrastructure and restore stability in Zawiya, Sorman and surrounding areas.
