University of Nigeria confirms Peter Obi’s diploma authenticity
In Nigeria, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, confirmed that presidential candidate Peter Obi was duly admitted to a philosophy programme in 1980 and obtained a bachelor’s degree in 1984. The university also certified the authenticity of the copy of the diploma submitted to it, Premium Times Nigeria reports.
University response
In a response to the publication’s inquiry dated August 26, the university stated that the politician’s full name is Gregory Peter Onwubuasi Obi. He was admitted to the Faculty of Social Sciences on September 3, 1980, and assigned registration number 80/26333.
According to the university, Obi received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy with Second Class Honours, Lower Division, on December 15, 1984. The response also listed diploma number D000198 and stated that it was awarded by the university senate.

Admission controversy
Doubts about the document arose due to statements by political opponents and critics on social media. In particular, Labour Party caucus vice-chairman Abayomi Arabambi claimed that Obi could not have been admitted to study philosophy because of his grades in English and mathematics.
The June 1978 WAEC certificate that Arabambi provided to journalists shows passing grades in these two subjects. At the same time, the University of Nigeria said that, for admission, Obi combined the result of this examination with the result of the November–December 1978 GCE.
The university stated that Obi’s documents met the admission requirements in force at the time and that he did not use alternative admission procedures, concessions, preparatory programmes, or equivalent qualifications. However, Premium Times Nigeria did not receive the attachments to the university’s response, including a copy of the November–December 1978 GCE results, so the publication was unable to independently verify their details.
