The Indian football team finished fourth in the Unity Cup 2026 after losing 1-0 to Zimbabwe in the third-place playoff match at The Valley, London, on Saturday.
A first-half penalty by Prince Dube (33’) proved to be the difference between the two sides on the night.
Only four teams competed in the Unity Cup, with the tournament beginning directly from the semi-final stage. India lost their semis 2-0 to Jamaica while Nigeria beat Zimbabwe with the same scoreline to reach the final.
Missing Ryan Williams, who was injured in India’s semi-final defeat to Jamaica earlier in the week, Khalid Jamil opted to start Vikram Pratap Singh and the winger looked lively and central to most of India’s forward forays in the first half.
Just before the half-hour mark, it seemed like Vikram would go through on goal after Ricky Shabong played in a long ball for him to chase but opposition captain Gerald Takwara broke down the move.
Just moments later, Zimbabwe, 130th in the football rankings, took the lead at the other end.
A mistimed challenge from India’s Farukh Choudhary on Marshall Munetsi saw the referee point towards the spot. Prince Dube calmly beat Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu to score from the penalty spot.
Gurpreet pulled off a fantastic save to deny Mongameli Tshuma in the 40th minute to ensure India went into the break trailing by just a single goal.
India came out as a more adventurous side in the second half in search of an equaliser and almost found one an hour into the match.
Lallianzuala Chhangte’s shot from the edge of the box from a Vikram Pratap Singh lay-off seemed destined for the back of the net before the Zimbabwean goalkeeper pushed it onto the post.
Entering the final 10 minutes of regulation time, the Blue Tigers had another golden opportunity to draw level but Macarton Nickson’s header from Akash Mishra’s cross flew inches off the target with the opposition keeper rooted to his spot.
As the clock ticked down, India intensified their pressure in search of an equaliser and head coach Jamil also made multiple attacking changes in an attempt to create an overload.
Zimbabwe, however, weathered the storm to see off a win.
