UN Warns of Rising Threats to Humanitarian Workers in Yemen

Aden — The United Nations has sounded the alarm over escalating threats facing humanitarian workers in Yemen, urging stronger protection measures to ensure they can carry out their duties safely amid mounting security pressures and access restrictions.

In a statement marking World Humanitarian Day, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen praised aid workers for continuing to deliver life-saving services despite difficult conditions, stressing that humanitarian action cannot succeed without a secure environment that allows staff to operate in line with humanitarian principles.

The official renewed calls to shield humanitarian personnel from intimidation, threats, and attacks, and demanded the immediate release of aid workers who remain in detention.

According to the UN, humanitarian teams managed to reach approximately 3.4 million people across Yemen during the first half of 2026, providing essential services despite severe challenges.

The statement highlighted that Yemen’s humanitarian crisis remains among the world’s worst: more than half the population faces acute food insecurity, half of children under five suffer from severe malnutrition, and 1.3 million pregnant and breastfeeding women are at risk. Two out of five health facilities are either non-functional or only partially operational.

The UN also warned of a widening gap between humanitarian needs and available funding. Yemen’s 2026 Humanitarian Response Plan has received only 20% of the required resources, forcing aid agencies to scale back critical programs. The organization urged donors to step up support to ensure assistance continues to reach millions of vulnerable Yemenis.
