Uganda 7s settle for 5th place at Driftwood 7s

The Uganda Rugby 7s Cranes put up a spirited performance at the Driftwood 7s in Mombasa, Kenya, winning 4 out of 6 games.

The Cranes named a relatively strong team for the Driftwood 7s, and it reflected on the pitch on Day 1. First, Uganda shook off Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad after the Cranes went ahead first with 5 points, but were immediately punished by Blad with a converted try under the posts. Thanks to Malcom Okello’s stellar performance, the Cranes managed to eventually win the game 27-14.

Uganda’s first of two losses then came against the Kenya National 7s champions, KCB Rugby. The star-studded side in green set themselves apart with a 12-point lead in the first half, but Uganda’s resilience in defence ensured the score would remain that way.

In attack, the Cranes were patient and methodical, but this would work against them as the rains from the Mombasa skies created a wet atmosphere that led to several handling errors by the Ugandans. Dennis Etwau’s solo try salvaged national pride for the Ugandans to end the game 12-7.

The Cranes then got back on their feet, defeating Kisumu RFC 17-12 in a tight encounter. Uganda then hit another stumbling block in the quarterfinal, where they were drawn against Kabras RFC.

The Sugar Boys established their class with a resounding 27-05 victory to put Uganda out of title contention. However, the Ugandans still had a strong fight in them, defeating NYS Spades 12-10 in the 5th-place semifinal.
