U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru from September 8 to 10 for meetings with the new right wing administrations in Bogotá and Lima, as well as with Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, the State Department announced Friday.

The official agenda, according to a brief State Department statement, includes enhanced cooperation “in the shared fight against narcoterrorism” and “the benefits of deeper commercial relationships”.

While the U.S. government has not officially confirmed further itinerary details, Colombian media have reported that Rubio will meet directly with President Abelardo de la Espriella in the Caribbean city of Barranquilla.

The trip marks the first visit by the top U.S. diplomat to Peru since conservative Keiko Fujimori took office at the end of July.

The tour coincides with a period of increasingly close Washington-Latin America relations, following electoral victories over the past year of several governments ideologically aligned with President Donald Trump’s administration.

Security ranks among the areas where the White House is strengthening regional partnerships. The commander of U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), Francis Donovan, had already traveled to Colombia in late August ahead of the secretary’s visit.
