Somalia, 12 July 2026 – The United States has welcomed Somalia’s swift response after members of the Somali Security Forces were filmed desecrating the American flag, saying those responsible must be held accountable to protect the longstanding partnership between the two countries.
In a statement, the U.S. Embassy in Somalia condemned the incident, describing it as an act that undermines bilateral relations, while commending the Federal Government for moving quickly to investigate and detain those involved.
“The United States has provided billions of taxpayer dollars in assistance to Somalia. Most notably, the good faith of the American people has long supported military action against terrorist organisations which threaten the United States and, most directly, target the Somali people,” the Embassy said.
The Embassy acknowledged the government’s immediate response following the circulation of the viral video.
“The US Embassy appreciates the Federal Government of Somalia’s quick response and decisive actions following a video of individuals in the Somali Security Forces desecrating the American flag.”
It added that those behind the incident should face consequences.
“Malfeasant actors who seek to tarnish Somalia’s relationship with the United States harm the Somali people and must continue to be held accountable.”
The controversy erupted after footage circulated online showing individuals believed to be members of the Somali Security Forces desecrating the US flag, prompting condemnation from both Washington and Mogadishu.
On Friday, Somalia’s Ministry of Defence distanced itself from the incident, describing the actions as unacceptable and contrary to the values and professionalism expected of the Somali National Army.
