U.S. President Donald Trump, pointing to Iran’s economic difficulties, stated that the Islamic Republic is currently in no position to negotiate from a position of strength. Speaking on Tuesday, June 23, in Pennsylvania, he remarked that Iran is grappling with food and medicine shortages, as well as high inflation, describing the country’s current situation as unprecedented.
Trump also told reporters that a portion of the funds scheduled to be released from Iran’s frozen assets will be spent on purchasing corn, soybeans, and wheat from American farmers.
The U.S. President further discussed the inspection program for Iran’s damaged nuclear facilities, announcing that International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors will be dispatched to these sites at the “appropriate time.”
In response to reports suggesting that there are no plans for IAEA inspectors to enter Iran, he said Iranian officials are mistaken on this matter and that Washington has reached an agreement with Tehran to implement “100 percent inspections.” When asked about the exact timeline for the start of this process, he noted that there is no rush, but that inspectors will be on-site at the right time.
Trump also expressed satisfaction with the progress of negotiations with Iran, stating that Washington is on the verge of reaching a “tremendous” deal with Tehran. According to him, the objective of this agreement is to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, and officials of the Islamic Republic also agree with this goal.
Meanwhile, officials of the Islamic Republic have rejected these claims, stating that talks regarding Iran’s nuclear file have not yet begun and that no agreement has been reached regarding either the return of IAEA inspectors or the level of inspections. Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic, stated on Monday that no meetings or encounters took place between Iranian officials and Rafael Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, in Switzerland, and that there is no plan in place for IAEA inspections of Iran’s damaged nuclear facilities.
