Trump Halts Planned Meeting Between Colombia’s Petro and Mamdani

The meeting between Colombian President Gustavo Petro and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, tentatively planned during the Colombian leader’s visit to the United States, was ultimately canceled amid a controversy that directly involves the Donald Trump administration.

The Washington Post first reported the story, which was later picked up by both U.S. and Colombian media outlets, claiming that the White House had intervened to prevent the meeting between the two progressive leaders, turning what appeared to be a routine political engagement into a diplomatic incident with international implications.

According to reports published in recent hours, the Colombian government interpreted that Washington had gone so far as to issue a warning about possible legal consequences if the meeting took place outside the activities authorized for Petro’s stay in New York.

Some accounts maintain that the Trump administration suggested the possibility of ordering the arrest of the Colombian president, a circumstance that ultimately led to the cancellation of a meeting that carried enormous symbolic significance for both leaders.

Petro is in New York this week to participate in and preside over a session of the United Nations Security Council, one of the most important items on his international agenda in recent weeks, where he chaired the organization’s meeting on Wednesday.

Taking advantage of his presence in the city, rumors circulated—although they were never officially confirmed—that the Colombian president would meet with Zohran Mamdani, the New York mayor who has become one of the most prominent emerging figures on the American left.

The meeting had an obvious political significance. Both leaders represent progressive movements that have gained prominence in recent years and share positions on issues such as fighting inequality, defending migrants’ rights, advancing the energy transition, and expanding social policies.

Beyond its institutional dimension, the meeting would have projected an image of closeness between two leaders who, from very different arenas, have become points of reference for progressive sectors both within and beyond their respective countries.

According to the U.S. newspaper, the meeting between the two progressive politicians “was intended to discuss democracy in the Americas,” but it unsettled several sectors of the U.S. establishment—including the Trump administration—because the gathering was viewed as “a sign of Mamdani’s rise as a leader of the global left.”

Washington clarified that the issuance of the new visa to the President of Colombia was due to Petro’s need to participate in United Nations meetings. “Under our UN headquarters agreements, we allow diplomats access to the UN, but the Office of Foreign Assets Control and visa sanctions remain in effect,” a State Department source said.

For its part, EFE’s reporting confirms that “the agreement between the UN and the U.S. requires it not to prevent the entry of leaders and diplomats traveling to its headquarters in New York,” but a meeting with Mamdani “would have fallen outside the official United Nations agenda.”

Quiet cancellation by the Colombian delegation

In this regard, The Washington Post reported that the Colombian delegation in New York “quietly canceled” the meeting between the two leaders following a meeting held in Bogota that included both U.S. and Colombian officials.

At that meeting, according to the newspaper, State Department officials made it clear that Washington considered the Petro-Mamdani event “unacceptable.” In this context, the publication states that Colombian delegates interpreted the statements made by U.S. diplomats “as a threat” that President Gustavo Petro could be arrested if he proceeded with his meeting with the New York mayor, leading to the cancellation of that item on the agenda.

On the U.S. side, the newspaper argues that the potential meeting between Petro and Mamdani would have constituted a “violation of visa restrictions” imposed on the Colombian president last year after he received a special visa, following the controversy generated in September 2025 when U.S. authorities revoked Petro’s visa over his demonstrations in the streets of New York after the United Nations General Assembly.

What is clear is that, through this move, Trump succeeded in preventing a meeting that Washington believed could strengthen the image of someone who increasingly appears to be consolidating his position as a leader of the opposition to President Trump’s administration, with an agenda aligned with global progressivism.

In this regard, Gustavo Petro is currently one of the most visible figures of the Latin American left. Since taking office as President of Colombia, he has advanced an agenda focused on social justice, the energy transition, institutional reform, and a foreign policy more independent from Washington.

Zohran Mamdani, meanwhile, has become one of the most recognizable faces of the new American left. His political rise has been accompanied by proposals centered on expanding social programs, defending workers’ rights, and promoting a more open approach to immigration and cultural diversity.
