Trump calls for beating China in AI race, dismissing concerns

Yeah Ben, we heard from uh President Trump this morning who took to Truth Social. He’s saying that the only AI regulation that we really need, he says, is a strong and smart president and the US has that in spades. He went on to say that, uh, that he mentioned Dario, uh, Amade from Anthropic. He also went on to say that there is this fear about that competition from China and he says we are quote, leading China within that post. But you can’t help but think as you mentioned, Ben, that we are expected to have that meeting between President Trump and Chinese State President, uh, Xi Jingping in the coming weeks. And this is a hot topic issue, especially among two leaders who are quote unquote leading this AI arms race. So what can we expect out of that meeting? And it doesn’t seem like the president is too worried, but at the same time there are investors and the street, there is some fear that we could fall behind if regulation does happen. So what could happen between these two key leaders?

Yeah, so AI is definitely going to be on the agenda at this meeting. It’s one of one of many talks, any topics, any meeting between the US and China has a lot on the table from trade and all these issues, but AI guard rails, the White House has signaled will be will be discussed, um, kind of voluntary ways that both countries can can limit AI development perhaps. Um, that comes just as there’s this widespread skepticism here in Washington that any, any limits on China will will will will will matter and will take effect. That that even if even if Xi Jinping comes and talks about limiting limiting AI, they’re all out on AI. They’re trying to kind of win this AI race in the in this next 24 to 36 month window and it kind of doesn’t it matters less what what he what he might commit to during a dinner with President Trump. They’re going all out and the US has to go all out as well. President Trump at that post showed and has his comments over the weekend have expressed again and again. He kind of views any attempts to regulate AI as as a as a hindrance in this battle. His core, his core concern, at least how he talks about it, is beating is beating China on the AI front in the next 24 to 36 months. So, it’s definitely going to be part of the talks here and I think we’ll hear some kind of conversations about maybe we build, maybe we sort of set up some safety on both sides, but it comes as the US at least is very skeptical that any agreement on the Chinese side will be held to.
