Tripoli Social Council urges government to act, warns of growing public anger

The Tripoli Social Council has called on the Government of National Unity to take urgent action by introducing practical, serious, and transparent solutions to the continued electricity outages, the persistent rise in the prices of essential goods and drinking water, and the deteriorating security situation.

The council also urged in a statement the government to be transparent with citizens by presenting clear plans and specific timelines for addressing the root causes of these crises.

The council warned that allowing the situation to persist without an effective response could lead to greater public frustration and escalating anger in the streets, potentially resulting in consequences that would undermine the security of the capital and the country’s stability. It stressed that responsible action is needed before the crisis worsens.

The statement also called on citizens to exercise restraint, express their legitimate demands through peaceful and civilized means, and refrain from damaging public or private property or endangering public safety, emphasizing that such property belongs to all Libyans and safeguarding it is a shared national responsibility.

The council reaffirmed its readiness to contribute to any national or community effort aimed at easing citizens’ hardships, fostering dialogue, and supporting initiatives that promote stability, protect citizens’ dignity, and preserve social peace, while reaffirming that the right to peaceful expression is guaranteed by the constitution and the law.

The statement comes as angry protests have erupted across several areas of Tripoli in response to deteriorating public services and living conditions.

During the demonstrations, protesters blocked several government, service, and banking institutions along the capital’s highway and in the districts of Tajoura and Souq Al-Jumaa, expressing frustration over the ongoing crises affecting daily life.

The demonstrators also called for the departure of all current political bodies and leaders, urging immediate action and comprehensive solutions to the worsening public service crises, and insisting that the current situation has become unsustainable.
