Tinubu delegates Shettima to Benin Rep for presidential inauguration

Vice President Kashim Shettima departed Abuja for inauguration of Benin Republic President-elect Romuald Wadagn, in Cotonou

Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Cotonou, the capital of the Benin, to represent President Bola Tinubu at the inauguration of President-elect Romuald Wadagni.

Senator Shettima is expected to join other African leaders and dignitaries from across the world at the ceremony scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday, May 24, 2026.

The swearing-in ceremony marks Wadagni’s formal assumption of office for a seven-year constitutional term. His running mate, Mariam Chabi Talata, is also expected to take the oath of office as Vice President.

The inauguration activities will commence in Porto-Novo, the administrative capital of Benin Republic, before proceeding to official state ceremonies at the Presidential Palace in Cotonou.

Traditional inauguration rites in Benin Republic usually include the formal handover of power, transfer of presidential insignia and a ceremonial motorcade procession to the Charles de Gaulle Stadium in Porto-Novo.

Nigeria and Benin Republic maintain longstanding bilateral relations rooted in shared history, cultural ties, trade and regional cooperation. Both countries also collaborate extensively on border security, energy partnerships and economic integration within the sub-region.

The Presidency stressed that the stability, peace and continued integration of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) remain a major priority for President Tinubu’s administration.

Since assuming office, President Tinubu has consistently advocated stronger regional cooperation and democratic stability across West Africa despite the political and security challenges confronting the sub-region.

The Vice President is accompanied on the trip by senior government officials and aides and is expected to return to Nigeria after the inauguration ceremonies.
