Three suspected CIT robbers shot dead in shoot-out on R80 in Pretoria

Three suspected cash-in-transit robbers were shot dead and another suspect was arrested after a shoot-out with police on the R80 in northern Pretoria on Monday.

Police spokesperson Col Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said a multidisciplinary team was following up on intelligence about suspects allegedly planning to commit a robbery.

The team included the SAPS tactical response team, anti-gang unit, Gauteng traffic airwing and private security companies through Business Against Crime South Africa.

Nevhuhulwi said the team spotted a white Hyundai H1 on the R80 and attempted to stop it using blue lights.

“The occupants allegedly opened fire on the police, who responded,” she said.

Three suspects were fatally wounded in the exchange of gunfire.

An AK-47 rifle and a 9mm pistol were recovered from the Hyundai H1.

Another suspect, who police believe was working with the same group, was travelling in a Toyota Avanza and was arrested. He was allegedly found in possession of a 9mm pistol.

Forensic experts were processing the scene for further evidence, while the recovered firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether they can be linked to other crimes.

Deputy provincial commissioner for policing in Gauteng, Maj-Gen Fred Kekana, praised the multidisciplinary team for its efforts to disrupt CIT and cross-pavement robberies in the province.
