The U.S. is exploring a military scenario involving Cuba
The Pentagon is considering various options for possible action regarding Cuba, including a military operation involving U.S. troops. According to CBS News, no final decision has been made to carry out such an operation, and discussions are still at the planning stage.
One possible scenario involves the deployment of thousands of troops from the U.S. 101st Airborne Division to the island. At the same time, U.S. officials believe this option is unlikely in the near future.
U.S. officials reported that plans for a possible operation against Cuba have been discussed over the past few weeks. However, no decision has yet been made to launch any military action. The Pentagon is considering various scenarios. Among them is the possible deployment of the 101st Airborne Division, one of the U.S. Army’s most mobile units.
At the same time, CBS News sources note that such an operation seems unlikely in the near future. The reason is that significant resources of the U.S. Department of Defense are currently tied up in other international crises, particularly due to the resumption of hostilities with Iran. Earlier, U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hagseth stated that any attempt by Cuba to acquire weapons that could pose a threat to the United States would prompt a strong response from Washington.
According to U.S. intelligence, Cuba has allegedly acquired more than 300 drones. The U.S. suspects that these drones could be used to attack the military base at Guantanamo, U.S. ships, or the state of Florida. However, there have been no official reports of Cuba preparing such attacks.
Despite discussions of a military scenario, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is currently attempting to influence the situation in Cuba through economic and diplomatic pressure. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously stated that Washington would like to see a government in Cuba that would implement reforms and changes in the country.
At the same time, on July 11, Rubio stated that the Cuban authorities continue to stick to their course and maintain control over the country. According to him, the current Cuban government is guided by a “morally bankrupt Marxist ideology” and shows no willingness to make serious changes.
Tensions between Washington and Havana have recently escalated. In May, CIA Director John Ratcliffe visited Cuba and stated that cooperation with the U.S. could be expanded if fundamental reforms were implemented. At the same time, he reminded Cuban authorities of the U.S.’s readiness to take tougher action, citing the operation to detain Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.
At this time, the U.S. has not announced any plans for military intervention in Cuba. However, the very fact that such a scenario is being discussed indicates growing tensions between the two countries, which have been rivals for decades. This was reported by CBS News.
The U.S. attacked a commercial tanker bound for Iran for the first time.
