The Uganda king Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV suffered from cancer and underwent a treatment in the USA. Unfortunately, he passed away in the hospital on August 27th and will remain the youngest ever Uganda monarch as he took the throne in 1995 when he was only three years old. The succession plan was in place as the country’s president Yoweri Museveni and the nation’s Chief of Defence Forces General Muhoozi Kainerugaba reportedly endorsed the selection by the kingdom’s Royal Succession Committee. And this body decided that the successor should be George Desmond Kamurasi, who captains the SE Dons in Bexleyheath, south-east London!

Mr. Kamurasi is the late king’s cousin since Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV didn’t have children. In fact, in 2025 his mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, publicly encouraged her son to marry because she wanted grandchildren. Unfortunately that never happened so it’s up to Kamurasi to make an unexpected retirement, leave the gloves and become the next ruler of the Tooro Kingdom. There have been mixed reports in Uganda about the possibility that the king, who never married, left a secret heir who would be a potential successor. The claim was disputed by the head of Tooro’s royal clan, who said Rukidi IV had no children, according to The Times.
According to some reports, Kamurasi got 15 out of 21 votes in the committee, but wasn’t consulted beforehand, and only found out about the decision after he came home for the funeral, which will be organized on Saturday. The goalkeeper is said to be reluctant to leave the UK and to become the king, according to Ugandan news sites. The SE Dons, who made their FA Cup debut this year, are expected to play the Greenways away from home on Saturday, in a match that will clash with Rukidi IV’s planned funeral.
