The Gambia have qualified for the 2026 CAVB Men’s Africa Nations Championship scheduled for 7 to 21 September in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Scorpions of Gambia capitalized on home advantage to win the 2026 CAVB Zone II Men’s Nations Championship unbeaten. The zonal competition, which served as a qualifier for the continental championship, was held in Banjul, Gambia from 17-21 June.
Four countries took part in the CAVB Zone II Men’s Nations Championship which was played in round robin format with the top ranked nation qualifying directly for the continental competition.
The Gambia begun their campaign with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-15) sweep of Guinea Bissau before overcoming Cape Verde 3-0 (21-25, 25-11, 25-0, 25-0) after the island nation forfeited the game in the second set with the hosts leading 14-11.
Senegal had registered straight sets wins against Cape Verde (26-24, 25-17, 25-16) and Guinea Bissau (25-12, 25-16, 25-23) to tie on 6 points with Gambia heading into the last match.
It’s the Gambia who outlasted Senegal in the decisive game, emerging on the right end of the five-set (20-25, 26-24, 24-26, 25-19, 15-10) thriller, to be crowned champions on 8 points.
Senegal settled for silver on 7 points while Cape Verde defeated Guinea Bissau by 3-1 (25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 25-22) in their last match to claim the bronze medal on 3 points. Guinea Bissau finished fourth without a point after losing all their three matches.
