The FE – 168 more Bangladeshis fly home after detention in Libya

Another 168 Bangladeshis have returned home from detention centres in Libya, where they had been held after being rescued from the Mediterranean Sea.

The Bangladesh Embassy in Libya said the migrants were flown home on Monday night on a Burak Air flight from the Ganfuda Detention Centre in Benghazi.

The flight landed at Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka after 10:00 am on Tuesday, according to FlightAware.

The embassy said it is working closely with local authorities and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to ensure the safe and humane repatriation of Bangladeshis held in different detention centres in Libya.

The returnees had spent long periods at the Ganfuda facility after being rescued from the Mediterranean Sea.

The embassy has warned irregular migrants that attempts to travel abroad through unsafe sea routes often have devastating consequences.

Many migrants die, go missing, fall into the hands of human traffickers or end up in detention centres, where they can face prolonged stays in harsh and inhumane conditions, it said.

Bangladeshis have been urged not to fall for false promises and misinformation from brokers and human traffickers or attempt to travel abroad through irregular routes.

Earlier, 174 Bangladeshis returned home from Libya on September 1 after being held in detention centres there.
