“The Embassy Is in the Building”: Somalia’s Defence Minister Sparks Debate With Cryptic Post | Dawan Africa

Mogadishu, 26 August 2026 – A brief Facebook post by Somalia’s Defence Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi – “السفارة في العمارة,” meaning “The Embassy Is in the Building” – has raised questions about who or what he was referring to.

The post came on the same day the Supreme Court annulled the results of Galmudug’s simultaneous elections.

The court ruled that Galmudug’s parliamentary and local council elections, held on July 30, were not conducted in accordance with the Constitution and electoral law. It ordered the electoral commission to organize fresh elections as soon as possible, while allowing current institutions to continue operating until new ones are lawfully established.

Fiqi did not mention the court, the electoral commission, Galmudug or any other party. Nor did he explain why he invoked the title of an Egyptian film about a man who returns home to discover that the Israeli embassy occupies the same building.
