The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee has named the Team SA squad for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with women forming the majority of the South African delegation heading to the Games, in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 24 June 2026.
The announcement comes with the Games set to open at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow on Thursday, 23 July 2026, the Scottish city’s second time hosting the event after the 2014 edition. Glasgow holds happy memories for Team SA, who claimed 40 medals there in 2014, including 13 gold, the joint most at any Commonwealth Games since the country’s return from isolation in 1994.
Glasgow 2026 comprises 10 sports, including six fully integrated para-sports, with Team SA represented across artistic gymnastics, athletics, boxing, cycling, judo, netball, swimming, weightlifting, bowls and 3×3 wheelchair basketball, along with the integrated para codes.
Leading the delegation is Chef de Mission Bongiwe Msomi, who was appointed to the role in May and who carried the South African flag at the Birmingham 2022 opening ceremony. Msomi will guide Team SA through the country’s 15th appearance at the Commonwealth Games.

In the pool, breaststroke specialist Lara van Niekerk returns as a defending Commonwealth champion, having completed the 50m and 100m breaststroke double at Birmingham four years ago. Van Niekerk anchors a swimming contingent that forms one of the largest women’s groups in the squad.
SASCOC President Barry Hendricks, who officially handed the athletes and support staff over to Msomi, expressed his confidence in the squad. “It goes without saying that we have the utmost confidence in the squad being delivered to Glasgow to fly our flag high. I always say to athletes that their role when representing their country is as much as being good ambassadors as it is being great competitors. All we ask of from the team is that they do their best, and the results will take care of themselves,” he said.
“The country has a proud and distinguished history at the Commonwealth Games, and I have no doubt whatsoever that those wearing the green and gold in Glasgow will continue the tradition of excellence.”
SASCOC President, Barry Hendricks
“It’s an exciting blend of youth and experience and the team is being led by a chef de mission who herself knows what it takes to succeed at this level of competition,” added Hendricks.
SASCOC also confirmed financial incentives for medal-winners. Individual gold medallists will receive R100 000, with their coaches earning R15 000; silver medallists R50 000, with R10 000 for the coach; and bronze medallists R25 000, with R5 000 for the coach. In team and relay events, gold earns each athlete R25 000 and the coach R15 000, silver R12 500 and R7 500, and bronze R6 250 and R3 750.
