TCN Raises Alarm Over Rising Vandalism, Warns Against Building Under Power Lines In Niger – Independent Newspaper Nigeria

 ABUJA  – The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has raised concerns over the increasing vandalism of electricity infrastructure, warning that attacks on transmission installations and illegal construction under power lines are threatening power supply and public safety across the country. 

The warning came during an anti-vandalism sensitization campaign held in Lambata Community, Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State, as part of efforts to safeguard critical transmission assets and ensure stable electricity distribution nationwide. 

Speaking at the programme, the General Manager, Transmission, Abuja Region, Engr. Musa Shuaibu, said vandalism of power infrastructure continues to drain resources that should ordinarily be deployed to expand and strengthen the national grid. 

According to him, repeated attacks on transmission facilities not only disrupt electricity supply to homes and businesses but also impose huge financial burdens on the power sector. 

Shuaibu noted that vandalism poses severe dangers to perpetrators and nearby residents, stressing that attempts to tamper with high-voltage installations have led to fatal electrocution in several cases. 

He also warned residents against erecting buildings or engaging in other activities within transmission line right-of-way corridors, describing such actions as hazardous and capable of triggering avoidable tragedies. 

“Beyond the economic losses, these acts pose serious risks to human lives. Building under transmission lines or vandalizing power installations can result in deadly consequences,” he said. 

TCN said the sensitization campaign is aimed at strengthening collaboration with host communities to improve surveillance around transmission assets and reduce cases of sabotage.
