Tarik El Taib Backs Morocco For Deep World Cup Run, Warns of Striker Shortage

Rabat – Former Libyan football star Tarik El Taib has hailed Morocco’s impressive performances at the 2026 World Cup, stating that the team is ready to go far in the tournament.

The 49-year-old former player stressed that the Atlas Lions have become true contenders thanks to their strong team spirit and growing confidence on the pitch.

Speaking to the Egyptian TV channel ON Sport, El Taib emphasized that Morocco’s current success is no accident, pointing to years of steady preparation behind the scenes.

“Morocco is harvesting the fruits of work that began four or five years ago. Even after changing the manager, we didn’t see major changes to the team’s core structure, which reflects the great stability the national team enjoys.” Said the former international.

El Taib also praised Morocco’s tactical evolution and fearless approach against top-tier opponents, noting that the team no longer just sits back but now actively dictates the tempo of the game.

“I really liked what Morocco showed against Brazil and Scotland, whether in terms of boldness, self-confidence, high pressing, or controlling the midfield. This national team has started imposing its own rhythm on matches, rather than just relying on counter-attacks as was the case in some previous periods.” He explained.

Looking ahead to their tournament prospects, the former playmaker urged the squad to remain focused while pointing to the one key area where they still need to improve.

“The current Moroccan team is capable of reaching the furthest point in the World Cup, but they need to stay humble and take it one match at a time. In my opinion, what they lack is attacking efficiency and a clinical, outright striker who can convert their many chances into goals.”

The former player went further to praise individual players, calling goalkeeper Yassine Bounou a safe pair of hands, Achraf Hakimi brilliant, and young Ayyoub Bouaddi one of the tournament’s biggest surprises.

He concluded by expressing his pride in their historic achievement, adding that it has been a very long time since any Arab team dominated European and South American giants in such a way, proving that Morocco can now compete with the world’s best.
