Takala calls for measures against September coup anniversary celebrations

The High Council of State President Mohamed Takala has called on the interior and defence ministers of the Government of National Unity to take legal and preventive measures against possible celebrations marking the anniversary of the September 1969 coup.

In a letter, Takala said freedom of expression and peaceful assembly were protected by law, but should not be used to disrupt public order, incite violence or attack people and property.

He also called for gatherings not to be used to revive symbols or slogans associated with the former regime, warning that this could fuel division and threaten civil peace.

Takala said citizens’ rights and freedoms should be protected while rejecting any attempts to restore one-man or military rule.
