Switzerland bested Colombia in penalty kicks, 4-3, in a tightly contested match in the World Cup round of 16 in BC Place in Vancouver on Tuesday, July 7.
Rubén Vargas scored the winning penalty kick after the game was scoreless through all of regulation and extra time.
Colombia’s Luis Díaz was emotional after the loss and cried with his jersey over his face.
Switzerland’s leading scorer, Johan Manzambi, did not play in the match due to injury.
Switzerland will now face defending champion Argentina, who escaped Egypt with a 3-2 win earlier in the day, in the quarterfinals. This is the fourth time Switzerland has made the World Cup quarterfinals, the farthest they’ve gone in the tournament. They also made the quarterfinals in 1934, 1938 and 1954.

He has not scored in the 2026 World Cup and was substituted off in the second half and the halftime break in Colombia’s last two matches.
