Switzerland Eliminates Algeria and Awaits Colombia or Ghana
Switzerland defeated Algeria 2-0 to advance to the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, recording its first World Cup knockout victory since 1938 and setting up a meeting with either Colombia or Ghana next Tuesday at BC Place in Vancouver. Breel Embolo opened the scoring in the 10th minute, and Dan Ndoye doubled the lead immediately after the restart. Switzerland will now face the winner of Friday’s match at Kansas City Stadium between South Americans and Africans.
Switzerland breaks an 88-year knockout drought against Algeria
Embolo gave Switzerland the lead after 10 minutes. Johan Manzambi advanced down the left flank before delivering a low cross that the striker converted for his second goal of the tournament. Algeria responded by committing more players forward, but Switzerland limited clear opportunities through Manuel Akanji and Nico Elvedi in central defence.
Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler controlled the midfield, limiting the influence of Riyad Mahrez and Ibrahim Maza. Algeria’s best chance arrived in first-half stoppage time, but goalkeeper Gregor Kobel preserved the advantage.
Switzerland doubled the lead seconds after the restart. Algeria failed to clear the ball on the edge of the penalty area, allowing Dan Ndoye to drive a low shot into the net in the 46th minute. The second goal forced Algeria to attack for most of the second half, while Switzerland continued creating chances on the counterattack.
After the match, coach Murat Yakin praised his team’s discipline. Algeria coach Vladimir Petković, who managed Switzerland between 2014 and 2021, said defensive mistakes decided the result.
Switzerland heads to the Round of 16 after topping Group B
Switzerland reached the knockout stage after finishing first in Group B with a 1-1 draw against Qatar, a 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, and a 2-1 win over Canada. Friday’s result against Algeria became the team’s third consecutive World Cup victory, the longest winning streak in Swiss World Cup history.
The win was Switzerland’s first in a World Cup knockout match since its 4-2 replay victory over Germany at the 1938 tournament. Although the team reached the knockout rounds several times during the following decades, it had not advanced beyond its opening elimination match.
Algeria ended its first World Cup appearance since 2014 with a Round of 32 defeat. The North African side qualified as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams but struggled to create clear scoring opportunities against Switzerland’s defence.
After the final whistle, captain Riyad Mahrez announced his retirement from international football, ending a career that included the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations title and two World Cup appearances.
Switzerland has become a regular presence in the knockout stage over the past two decades, qualifying from the group phase at the 2006, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026 World Cups. Despite that consistency, the team repeatedly exited in its first elimination match, including penalty shootout defeats to Ukraine in 2006 and Spain in 2010, and losses to Argentina in 2014 and Portugal in 2022.
The victory over Algeria therefore marked the first time in nearly nine decades that Switzerland progressed beyond its opening knockout fixture.
