Storms force crowds to evacuate America 250 event
All right, so the organizers of this event just told everyone to evacuate immediately because of an incoming storm. We have seen *** couple of bolts of lightning. Now people are taking shelter so this storm could pass. We will have some updates on how this could impact tonight’s event. Visitors had also braved triple-digit temperatures in the nation’s capital to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.“This is the greatest country in the world, truly. I mean, we have our problems, but every country has their problems, and there is just no better place. We love it here,” Kady Hinojosa of South Carolina said.The historic milestone event is slated to feature flyovers, musical performances, and an 18-minute illumination of the Washington Monument, transforming it into a canvas of light.Organizers delayed general access Saturday afternoon to keep attendees out of the heat. In front of the main stage, shade was limited, but tents were set up on the sides to provide relief from the sun. Water stations were available for people to fill plastic bottles, and organizers monitored the forecast for possible storms. “The safety of our guests, performers, and staff is our top priority. Freedom 250, United States Park Police, National Park Service, United States Secret Service, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and all public safety partners are actively monitoring weather conditions,” Danielle Alvarez, Freedom 250 Spokesperson, said.Despite the conditions, crowds lined up to secure the best spots to watch performances and catch a glimpse of Trump, who is expected to speak at 9:45 p.m. The celebration will close out with what is being described as the world’s largest fireworks show.“This is like, for us, the Macy’s Day Parade. One of those once-in-a-lifetime events you can’t miss. However you can get here, you have to get here to see this,” Ryan McIntire of New York said.
