SPLM steps up grassroots mobilization ahead of December elections — Eye Radio

The ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, SPLM, says it is strengthening its grassroots structures as it prepares for its third National Convention and the general elections scheduled for December.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit met the party’s Resource Mobilisation Team on Thursday as the SPLM continues with its internal reorganisation ahead of the elections.

SPLM Secretary-General Akol Paul Kordit says the party wants to move away from what he described as “hotel-based politics” in Juba and increase engagement with communities across the country.

“We want to assure our members and cadres that the power is going back to the people of South Sudan,” Akol said.

He said the party intends to ensure that people representing communities in government are selected with the support of their constituencies.

Akol also reaffirmed the SPLM’s support for President Kiir as the party’s flag bearer for the upcoming elections.

He described Kiir as the candidate the SPLM believes can deliver peace, stability and national unity.

Meanwhile, the party’s Resource Mobilization Committee says it is preparing for a nationwide and international outreach campaign.

Its head, Lam Tungwar, said the committee will travel across South Sudan and engage supporters abroad to mobilise financial and political support ahead of the elections.

The SPLM says the mobilization campaign will form part of its broader strategy to strengthen party structures and expand its presence at the grassroots.

The party is also expected to hold its third National Convention ahead of the December polls.
