South Sudanese traders in Kenya urged to secure licenses, register

A South Sudanese member of the East African Legislative Assembly is urging South Sudanese small-business owners in Kenya to obtain the required licenses from Kenyan authorities and register with the South Sudanese Embassy in Nairobi to avoid shutdowns.

The call comes after Kenyan President William Ruto announced an ultimatum for small businesses run by foreign nationals to be closed.

Another directive gives foreign business operators a 90-day ultimatum to regularise their immigration status.

Speaking to Eye Radio, Kim says South Sudanese and other citizens of East African Community member states will not be affected by the directive.

However, he says they will be required to register their businesses through their respective embassies.

He urged South Sudanese business owners in Kenya, including those operating restaurants, salons and other small businesses, to comply with the new requirement.

Kim says the registration is intended to ensure that South Sudanese doing business in Kenya are protected under the law and properly identified.

He also warned those who fail to comply that they could face risks under the new measures, which he says took effect on September seventh.
