South Sudan, Sudan resume joint security talks in Juba

JUBA — South Sudan and Sudan have resumed their Joint Political and Security Mechanism meeting in Juba after several years without holding a session.

The meeting brings together senior defence and security officials from the two countries to discuss issues between the neighbouring states.

Sudan’s Defence Minister and co-chair of the mechanism, Lieutenant General Hassan Daoud Kabroom, says continued cooperation is important for peace and stability in both countries.

Speaking in Juba, Kabroom thanked the South Sudanese government for welcoming the Sudanese delegation.

“We are here in our second home and we appreciate our brothers for welcoming their brothers from Sudan. Secondly, we are here to solve issues between the two countries because they deserve peace and stability. We are to work together for the stability of both countries.”

South Sudan’s Defence Minister and co-chair of the mechanism, Lieutenant General Chol Thon Balok, also welcomed the Sudanese delegation led by his counterpart.

Balok says the Joint Political and Security Mechanism was established during the period of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

He says the mechanism has continued to deal with political and security issues between the two countries.

“We have a mechanism that was established since the beginning of the CPA up to date. We have issues.”

Balok says the resumption of the meeting follows his invitation to the Sudanese delegation to attend the joint session in Juba.

The two countries are using the meeting to address issues between them through the existing joint mechanism.
