South Africa’s AmaZulu King to lead urgent delegation to Zimbabwe amid xenophobia tensions

Tensions have risen sharply in South Africa regarding undocumented migrants. Anti-immigrant groups issued an unofficial deadline for undocumented foreigners to leave the country, sparking massive nationwide protests.

Instead of leaving the crisis entirely to politicians, South Africa’s traditional royalty is taking action.

AmaZulu King Misuzulu and King Ndamase Ndamase of the AmaMpondo kingdom are leading the diplomatic trip. They want to find a cooperative regional solution.

The kings argue that traditional communities across Southern Africa share deep historical and ancestral roots that predate modern borders, and these ties should not be ruined by modern migration disputes.

Confirming the high-stakes nature of the mission, Inkosi Malusi Zondi, who serves as the AmaZulu King’s Representative and Royal Envoy, emphasized the sensitivity of the talks.

In a report by Independent Online (IOL), one of South Africa’s leading digital news and information platforms, Zondi stated: “I cannot divulge the agenda of the meeting before it takes place; however, I can assure the public that the issue of illegal immigration is on the agenda.”

In response to the volatile situation, the South African government has actively intervened to de-escalate tensions and protect vulnerable communities.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has strongly condemned vigilante groups and anti-foreigner sentiment, emphasizing that the state alone holds the authority to enforce immigration laws.

To prevent violence, President Ramaphosa directed national security forces to remain on high alert during public demonstrations while simultaneously launching diplomatic efforts, which include dispatching special envoys to neighboring African nations to foster regional cooperation and address the root causes of irregular migration.

The royal leaders met with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to align their efforts before departing.

During their upcoming talks with Zimbabwean President Mnangagwa, the kings hope to propose a regional summit in Victoria Falls.

The goal of the summit will be to figure out how to handle migration cooperatively, protect minority communities, and turn regional migration into an economic strength rather than a source of violence.
