MOGADISHU, 9 August 2026 — Somalia’s Salvation Forum has rejected the process leading to the election of the Speaker of the House of the People, set to take place Monday at the Somali Parliament in Mogadishu.
The Forum held a press conference on Sunday to announce its opposition, citing concerns over how the contest is being conducted.
Yusuf Hussein Gama’diid, Secretary-General of the Himilo Qaran Party and a member of the Salvation Forum, read the group’s statement. He said information gathered by the Forum indicated that the election was a “one-sided” process.
Gama’diid accused the Somali presidency of interfering in the parliamentary race. He alleged that some lawmakers who intended to contest the speakership had been prevented from declaring their candidacies or registering for the election.
