Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) says it has intercepted a large cache of chemicals allegedly intended for use in making explosives by al-Shabaab militants in the country’s south.

In a statement released on Thursday evening, the agency said the materials were recovered during a targeted security operation in the Lower Shabelle region.

According to NISA, militants buried more than 100 containers of chemical substances in the Jilib Marka area after becoming aware that security forces were monitoring their movements.

The agency said the operation disrupted militant supply routes and dismantled elements of what it described as al-Shabaab’s logistical network.

“This operation is part of the ongoing efforts by security agencies to dismantle al-Shabaab’s terror network, particularly targeting the supplies and equipment used in terrorist attacks,” NISA said.

The agency did not provide further details on the type of chemicals seized or whether any arrests were made.

The latest operation comes as Somali authorities continue a broader campaign against al-Shabaab, combining military, intelligence and security measures across several regions of the country.

Al-Shabaab, an Islamist militant group linked to al-Qaeda, has waged an insurgency in Somalia for more than a decade and frequently carries out attacks targeting government institutions, security forces and civilians.
