Somalia joins IPU youth parliamentarians’ conference in Uzbekistan

Samarkand, Uzbekistan (HOL) — Somalia is taking part in the 12th IPU Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians, held from Sept. 4 to 6 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

The conference, organized under the Inter-Parliamentary Union, serves as the IPU’s dedicated platform for young parliamentarians.

Somalia is represented by MP Sadiq Abdullahi Abdi, who joined nearly 100 parliamentarians from 50 countries at the gathering.

The conference focused on protecting human rights, promoting sustainable development and peace, and strengthening the role of parliaments in addressing challenges facing young people.

In his speech, MP Sadiq Abdullahi Abdi highlighted the importance of creating economic opportunities for young people, emphasizing their economic rights, access to decent jobs and participation in economic development.

“Parliaments have a key role in enacting laws and policies that support job creation, youth entrepreneurship, skills development and inclusive economic growth, as well as accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals,” he said.

The conference was held under the theme “Reclaiming human rights, justice and dignity for all in turbulent times.”

Participants also stressed the importance of young people’s full participation in decision-making and development efforts.

The conference renewed the commitment of young parliamentarians to protect human rights, promote peace and create better opportunities for young people to achieve a sustainable future.
