Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali Infantry Forces commander Gen. Sahal Abdullahi Omar met an Italian government delegation in Mogadishu on Thursday to discuss strengthening military cooperation, training and support for the Somali National Army.
The delegation, accompanied by Italy’s military attaché to Somalia, was received at the Somali military headquarters by Sahal and senior officers of the Somali National Armed Forces.
Military officials said the talks focused on expanding cooperation between the Somali and Italian armed forces, including tactical support, training for ground troops and institutional capacity-building for Somalia’s defense sector.
Sahal briefed the Italian delegation on the immediate priorities of Somalia’s infantry forces and said sustained international partnerships remain important for consolidating security gains across the country.
The meeting comes as Somalia continues efforts to rebuild and modernize its armed forces while taking on greater responsibility for national security operations.
Italian officials thanked the Somali military leadership for the reception and reaffirmed Rome’s commitment to supporting Somalia’s security institutions through training, logistical assistance and defense cooperation.
Italy has long maintained security and development ties with Somalia, including support for military training and stabilization efforts.
