Somalia confirms killing of top Al-Shabaab leader Abu Abdalla in targeted military operation

A senior Al-Shabaab commander, identified as Abu Abdalla, was killed during a military operation conducted by the Somali National Army in the Lower Shabelle region, Somalia’s Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

According to the ministry, the operation took place in the Hanti Wadaag area of Lower Shabelle and resulted in the deaths of two Al-Shabaab members, including Abu Abdalla and his personal bodyguard.

Authorities said Abu Abdalla played a central role in planning and executing attacks targeting local communities, civilians and members of the security forces in parts of Lower Shabelle. His death is being viewed by the government as a setback to the militant group’s operations in the region, where Somali forces have continued conducting security operations against Al-Shabaab strongholds.

In a statement released after the operation, the Ministry of Defence said the commander had been involved in militant activities for an extended period and was responsible for coordinating and directing Al-Shabaab operations across several areas of Lower Shabelle.

“The operation eliminated a terrorist leader known as Abu Abdalla, who had been involved for an extended period in the planning and execution of terrorist attacks targeting local communities,” the ministry said.

The ministry stated that Abu Abdalla held a leadership position within the group and was linked to the coordination of attacks affecting both civilians and security personnel. Officials said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle the group’s command structure and reduce its ability to organise and launch attacks.

Lower Shabelle remains one of the regions where Somali security forces have maintained pressure on Al-Shabaab through a series of military operations aimed at removing the group’s presence from rural areas and disrupting its activities.

The region has experienced frequent clashes between government forces and Al-Shabaab fighters as authorities seek to expand state control and improve security.

The killing of Abu Abdalla comes amid continued operations by the Somali National Armed Forces against senior Al-Shabaab figures. Security officials have repeatedly stated that targeting the group’s leadership is intended to weaken its operational network and limit its ability to coordinate attacks against civilians and government institutions.

The Ministry of Defence said the latest operation forms part of a wider campaign aimed at degrading Al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities and preventing future attacks against the Somali population. Officials noted that the military will continue pursuing militant leaders and fighters wherever they are located.

The ministry also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining military pressure on the group, saying operations will continue until the threat posed by Al-Shabaab is significantly reduced.

In its statement, the Ministry of Defence and the Command of the Somali National Armed Forces said they remain committed to protecting the country and strengthening security across affected regions.

The authorities emphasised that efforts to counter Al-Shabaab will continue through coordinated military actions designed to eliminate threats and improve safety for communities.

Al-Shabaab, which has waged an insurgency against the Somali government for years, continues to carry out attacks in different parts of the country despite ongoing military operations aimed at weakening the group.

Somali forces, often working alongside local fighters and international partners, have intensified efforts to target the group’s leadership, financial networks and operational bases.
