Dar Es Salaam (HOL) — Somalia’s U-17 women’s football team made history Wednesday by defeating Sudan 8-2 in their final Group A match at the CECAFA U-17 Women’s Championship in Dar es Salaam.
The victory marked the first time a Somali national women’s team has won a match in a regional competition, a milestone for women’s football in the country.
Nagma Mohamed netted a hat-trick, while Sundus Mohamaed picked a brace in the huge win for Somalia at the KMC Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Hibo Salad, Halimo Isse and Maryan Osoble also got their names on the score sheet.
The Sudan team which is also playing in the regional tournament for the first time scored through Nashwa Abbas and Fatin Fadol.
“I am very happy that I scored three goals today. This will motivate me to keep working hard,” said Nagma Mohamed who netted a hat-trick and was voted player of the match.
Somalia, known as the Ocean Queens, opened the tournament with a 4-0 defeat to host Tanzania before losing 6-0 to Kenya in their second match. Those results ended the team’s chances of advancing to the next round.
Despite their early elimination, Somalia’s young players delivered a dominant performance against Sudan, scoring eight goals and conceding two.
The result was widely welcomed by Somali football supporters as a historic achievement and a sign of progress for the development of women’s football in Somalia.
Although the Ocean Queens exited the tournament in the group stage, their win over Sudan gave Somalia a landmark moment in regional women’s football.
