Shettima Returns to Nigeria After AU Summit in Angola

Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria following his participation in the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, AU, held in Luanda, Angola.

Shettima represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the high-level continental summit, where Nigeria called for stronger African-led mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution.

Nigeria also urged urgent action by African leaders to address recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks against Africans and other foreign nationals in South Africa.

At the summit, the Nigerian delegation backed the Luanda Action Plan and stressed the need for sustainable financing of Africa’s peace and security architecture.

The country also called for stronger collective responsibility among member states of the African Union and greater African ownership of solutions to conflicts across the continent.

Nigeria maintained that lasting peace and security in Africa could only be achieved through stronger cooperation among African countries and the development of effective home-grown mechanisms for preventing and resolving conflicts.

The Vice President returned to Abuja after the conclusion of his engagements at the summit in Angola.
