Caitlin Clark’s FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup debut ended with a gold medal and impressive passing numbers, but an early claim about her assist record has sparked mixed reactions from WNBA fans.
The United States won its fifth straight World Cup title and 12th gold medal overall, continuing its incredible run on the international stage.

Caitlin Clark’s World Cup Assists Stat Leads to Division Within WNBA Fans
Clark did not start any of the team’s six games but played an important role from the bench, finishing with 32 assists and averaging 5.3 per game. She also recorded 47 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 steals in 116 minutes.
On Sunday, Polymarket Hoops hadsparked a discussion by highlighting that Clark was averaging the most assists per game among Team USA players in World Cup history.
Reacting to the post, one user noted that Clark posted her numbers while playing limited minutes.
“Caitlin Clark averaged all these assists in limited minutes while she was iced out. She will average 10 or more if they run the offense through her in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics,” they wrote.
“And she barely played,” another fan added.
Clark’s 32 assists also came with 13 turnovers, highlighting how much of her role involved creating opportunities for others.

Another fan simply wrote: “Passing is pure art.”
Clark’s 5.3 APG in the World Cup is impressive, but it is worth noting that this was her first World Cup appearance. That means her 5.3 APG was higher than Dawn Staley’s career mark and put her above the established USA players in the category if we do not consider minimum games.
Naturally, that stat is bound to change when Clark participates in more tournaments.
There is also an important difference between career and single-tournament numbers, because Staley averaged 5.8 APG at the 1998 World Cup, higher than Clark’s 5.3 in 2026.

The overall career World Cup APG leader is Julie Allemand of Belgium, at 7.4 APG, among players with at least 10 World Cup games. Similarly, Staley is the highest-ranked Team USA player on that list, with 4.1 APG.
Clark has unarguably made an impressive start, but it is far too early to call her the definitive all-time record holder.
One fan asked why there was no post about Jackie Young, who scored 74 points and had 19 assists in their gold-medal run.
They also noted that Breanna Stewart, who was the tournament MVP as the USA’s top scorer with 77 points, received less attention.

Another fan took a shot at Clark and remarked, “She also averages no defense.”
Several other fans pointed out that the stat was a bit misleading.
“I don’t think this is true. Dawn averaged 5.8. Caitlin 5.3.”
Nonetheless, Clark’s biggest impact in the tournament clearly came through her passing and offensive creation, while Team USA had several players handling major defensive responsibilities.
Now, the celebrations begin for Team USA before the players return to league action this week as teams bid for a deep playoff run.
