Senegal, IMF Advance Talks On New Support Programme

Senegal and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have welcomed progress in talks towards a new programme to support the country’s economic recovery.

Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva discussed the country’s economic policy priorities during a meeting at the IMF headquarters in Washington on Tuesday, 15 September 2026.

The Senegalese presidency said the two sides pledged to move quickly towards a new Fund-supported programme.

Georgieva said the IMF and Senegal had a strong partnership and were working expeditiously towards a new Fund-supported programme.

“Senegal has made encouraging progress in strengthening the economy and improving the outlook for investments, jobs and growth,” Georgieva said.

She also welcomed the authorities’ intention to pursue a debt treatment and said Senegal was determined to restore fiscal sustainability quickly.

The proposed programme followed an agreement reached between IMF staff and the Senegalese authorities on key economic policies that could underpin a new 36-month Extended Credit Facility arrangement.

The agreement is expected to support efforts to restore macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability, reduce fiscal and external vulnerabilities, increase social spending and promote sustainable, private-sector-led growth.

The IMF and Senegal have continued discussions on the country’s economic reform programme amid efforts to strengthen public finances, improve fiscal transparency and create conditions for increased investment and job creation.

The latest engagement between Faye and Georgieva underscored the continued cooperation between Senegal and the IMF as both sides work towards finalising the new support programme.
