Russian satellite images used to create 3D model of Morocco’s Agadir

A three-dimensional model of the Moroccan city of Agadir has been created from images captured by Russia’s InnoSat16 satellite, Russian media reported on September 11.

Russian company Geoscan used a series of satellite images and photogrammetry technology, which reconstructs the shape of objects and terrain from photographs, to produce the 3D representation of Agadir. The same images were also used to create a video simulating a flight over the area.

According to Geoscan, the project demonstrated that the satellite’s guidance, orientation and stabilization systems can produce images of sufficient quality for further analysis of territories from orbit.

InnoSat16 was launched from Russia’s Vostochny Cosmodrome on July 25, 2025, becoming the country’s first CubeSat 16U satellite placed into orbit. Its main payload is a panchromatic camera developed by NPO Lepton, capable of capturing black-and-white images of the Earth’s surface at a resolution of up to 2.5 meters per pixel from an altitude of around 500 kilometers.

Geoscan, which has been developing its space activities since 2021, has so far created and launched 17 small satellites for scientific experiments, communications technology testing and Earth observation.
