Russia Threatens Britain Over Ukraine’s Use of British Drones in Strikes on Russian Territory: how 12 outlets framed it
Drones, threats, and response
The BBC reported that the Russian Embassy to the UK said the United Kingdom is acting as an accomplice and co-perpetrator of “bloody crimes and terrorist attacks,” while a Ministry of Defence spokesperson told BBC News that Britain stood “shoulder to shoulder” with Ukraine.
The BBC said the drones built by two separate British companies were used inside Russia in targeting of military and industrial targets, including refineries and warehouses of the online retailer Wildberries.
The BBC also said a military source confirmed to the BBC that UK drones had been used in the attacks, which were said to have caused more than £35bn in economic damage.
In response to Moscow’s warning, the UK Ministry of Defence spokesperson told journalist Alex Raufoglu that “Britain stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine and we are committed to providing the equipment Ukraine needs to defend itself against Putin’s illegal invasion.”
Quotes and competing framings
Russia’s embassy in London warned that “London’s actions will inevitably carry consequences for which it will have to answer,” framing Britain’s support for Kyiv as a driver of escalation.
The BBC quoted the embassy saying that adding involvement meant “the higher the price it will pay,” while the UK Ministry of Defence spokesperson insisted Russia “should be in no doubt about the resolve of this Government to stand against Russian aggression, in Ukraine and against the UK and our allies.”
The Independent described the embassy’s stance as accusing Britain of “seeking to contain Russia and inflict maximum damage on it by proxy,” while also quoting the same “London’s actions will inevitably carry consequences” language.
The Independent also reported that the Sunday Times said Ukrainian forces used unmanned aircraft manufactured by two UK companies as part of a deep strike campaign, including against oil refineries and other targets inside Russia.
The Independent further said Russia’s Ministry of Defence claimed it had shot down 598 Ukrainian drones over 19 Russian regions, as well as the Black and Azov Seas and the annexed Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea.
What’s at stake next
London Business News reported that Vladimir Solovyov demanded that Britain’s arms factories and ships supplying weapons to Ukraine be attacked, saying “Hit them with Poseidon,” and adding Britain should be given three days to “learn to breathe underwater”.
The BBC said Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova claimed drones using UK components and configurations were used to attack Russian territory, including a fuel depot in the Kamensky District of the Rostov Region.
The BBC also reported that in the latest attacks overnight, Russian officials said some 620 drones had been flown towards the region surrounding Moscow, with Russian air defences destroying more than 180 of the drones but leaving people wounded.
In parallel, the BBC said that on Saturday night Ukraine fired some 822 drones towards Russia, with 600 aiming for Moscow, while Russian attacks on Ukraine killed at least seven people and injured more than 39.
