Report: Sporting KC top MLS suitor for Egypt, Liverpool star Mo Salah

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Sporting Kansas City finds itself at the bottom of the Major League Soccer Western Conference standings nearly halfway through the season. With so much momentum for the sport in Kansas City due to the World Cup, the team could use a jolt to keep that going.

And that’s exactly what took place Friday. Tom Bogert of The Athletic and CBS Sports Golazo reported that “Sporting KC has emerged as top MLS suitor for Liverpool legend Mo Salah,” according to sources.

In response to Bogert’s reporting on social media, Sporting KC owner Peter Mallouk said, “Promises made will be promises kept. Lots of conversations happening. One way or another, this team will be significantly better in the second half, much better by the sprint season.“

Salah, the 34-year-old captain of the Egyptian national team, had played for Liverpool in the English Premier League over the past nine seasons. He scored the fourth-most goals in Premier League history (193). He ended his run with Liverpool as the highest-scoring African player and highest-scoring non-Englishman in the history of the EPL. During Salah’s tenure with The Reds, Liverpool won the EPL title in 2019-20 and 2024-2025.

He is one of only two players to win the Premier League Golden Boot four times, joining Thierry Henry.

Nicknamed the “Egyptian King,” Salah led his national team to a Round of 16 appearance against Argentina. A remarkable comeback by the defending World Cup champions ended The Pharaohs’ World Cup run.

Mallouk, who took over as the majority owner of Sporting Kansas City in January, is the son of Egyptian immigrants. Whether he is able to lure what would be the biggest star ever to don Sporting blue remains to be seen. But he has promised to right the ship on an otherwise disappointing 2026 season.

“I know I have to give the fans a reason to believe. Moving as fast as possible to give them more than a few reasons!” Mallouk said on social media.

“One way or another things are going to get substantively better,” he added.
