Newly-signed Kaizer Chiefs attacker Elias Mokwana has revealed that his move to the Glamour Boys was supposed to happen much earlier, with the winger admitting that he was initially expected to join Amakhosi instead of making the switch to Esperance in 2024.

The 26-year-old has finally completed his long-awaited move to Naturena, with the former Sekhukhune United and Esperance attacker now set to represent the club he grew up supporting.

Mokwana’s arrival has generated considerable excitement among the Chiefs faithful, with the winger expected to add attacking quality to the squad as the club looks to strengthen its ambitions.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Mokwana opened up about his long-standing connection with Amakhosi and revealed that the opportunity to join the Soweto giants had presented itself during his time at Sekhukhune United.

“I grew up supporting Amakhosi. I first heard that they were interested in me when I was at Sekhukhune. Instead of going to Esperance, I was supposed to come here, but unfortunately some obstacles prevented it from happening at the time,” Mokwana told the club’s official website.

The winger’s comments offer an insight into a transfer that could have happened in 2024, before his career took him to Tunisia, where he continued to develop his game.

Despite the initial disappointment of not joining Chiefs at the time, Mokwana has now realised his dream of playing for the club he supported growing up.

The attacker also revealed how he reacted when he finally received the call confirming his move to Amakhosi, describing the moment as one that was difficult to put into words.

“I was sitting with my sisters, and the first thing I did was phone my mother to share the good news with her. I can’t explain the feeling exactly. I’m excited. It’s a very nice feeling. This is a good place with good people, and I am very happy to be here.”

For Mokwana, joining Chiefs represents more than just another transfer in his career. It is an opportunity to fulfil a childhood ambition while also taking on the responsibility that comes with wearing the famous Gold and Black.

The winger has made it clear that his ambitions extend beyond simply being part of the squad, with the desire to contribute to the club’s success and help bring silverware back to Naturena.

“For me, it is a dream come true. I have always wanted to prove myself in this team and to play a part in bringing some trophies to the Club.”
